Munich. <\/span><\/strong><\/b>For five decades, the collection BMW Art Cars has been shown that a car can be much more than a means of transport or a machine of high performance. Each vehicle has become a canvas where some of the most influential artists of the world have shaped their creative vision, fusing the contemporary art with the automotive engineering. Now, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of this iconic collection, BMW presents an unprecedented event: for the first time in history, the 20 BMW Art Cars exhibit gathered in the same space.<\/p>

The exhibition, entitled “BMW ART CARS \u2013 20 ARTISTS, 50 YEARS OF INNOVATION. ASSEMBLED AT BMW WELT”, will remain open from July 29 to 31 of August of 2026 at BMW Welt, in Munich, becoming one of the most important cultural events organized by the German brand.<\/p>

In addition to representing the official closing of the BMW Art Car World Tour, which took the collection to more than 30 countries during the past year, the exhibition offers a unique journey through a century of creativity, design, technology innovation, and collaboration between the automotive industry and the contemporary art.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Five decades transforming cars into works of art<\/strong><\/h5>

The story of the BMW Art Cars began in 1975 thanks to an idea of the French rider, collector and auctioneer of art Herv\u00e9 Poulain, who imagined that a competition car could become a real work of art without losing its essence of sport.<\/p>

The proposal had the support of Jochen Neerpasch, then director of BMW Motorsport, and of the american artist Alexander Calder, who agreed to intervene in a BMW 3.0 CSL which later would compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.<\/p>

What initially appeared to be a unique project ended up becoming one of the collaborations of the most prestigious between the art world and the automotive industry.<\/p>

Jochen Neerpasch recalls that moment as the beginning of a tradition that no one imagined it would have such an international impact.<\/p>

\u201cWhen we presented the BMW designed by Alexander Calder understood that that would not be an isolated project. I never imagined that it would end up becoming in the collection of cars artistic most important in the world.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>

Since then, the collection has gathered some of the most important names in modern art and contemporary, who have been reinterpreted different BMW models under their own creative vision.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

BMW Welt brings together for the first time the 20-BMW Art Cars<\/strong><\/h5>

Although the collection has toured museums and international exhibitions for decades, never before has it been possible to contemplate the twenty vehicles in the same place.<\/p>

BMW Welt, considered one of the centers of cultural and architectural more representative of the brand in Munich, it becomes the ideal setting for this historical celebration.<\/p>

The exhibition brings together works created by artists of international stature such as Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Esther Mahlangu, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Cao Fei, John Baldessari, and Julie Mehretu, among many others.<\/p>

Each car reflects not only the artistic style of its creator, but also the historical context and technology of the era in which it was conceived.<\/p>

The tour allows you to observe the evolution of automotive design BMW through iconic models like the BMW 3.0 CSL, the BMW M1, the BMW Z1, and the most recent BMW M Hybrid V8.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A chronological journey through the history of art and innovation<\/strong><\/h5>

The experience begins with an audio \/ visual introduction that explains the origins and importance of the collection BMW Art Cars.<\/p>

Unlike a traditional tour, the exhibition begins with the most recent works for after back chronologically until we reach the first car intervened in 1975.<\/p>

Visitors are first BMW Art Car number 20, created by Julie Mehretu, followed by the number 19, designed by John Baldessari.<\/p>

Later, the route crosses through several decades by a time line that contextualizes each car in the evolution of artistic, technological, and cultural BMW.<\/p>

The trip concludes with the legendary BMW 3.0 CSL designed by Alexander Calder, considered to be the starting point of a collection that redefined the relationship between art and mobility.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

An interactive experience for all visitors<\/strong><\/h5>

The exhibition incorporates a variety of digital tools which enhance the experience of attendees.<\/p>

One of them is a Treasure Hunt, an application that invites you to discover the BMW Art Cars through an interactive tour.<\/p>

The visitors only need to scan five vehicles to unlock a coupon that can be redeemed for food and beverages within the enclosure.<\/p>

In addition to the recreational component, the platform provides additional information about each car and on the public in the artistic concepts behind the works.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Artlas makes the journey in a personalized experience<\/strong><\/h5>

BMW also developed a special version of the application Artlas exclusively for this exhibition.<\/p>

The platform provides detailed information about the twenty BMW Art Cars by means of texts, narratives in audio and themed tours.<\/p>

Thanks to the use of augmented reality, simply point your smartphone towards any of the vehicles to automatically access additional content.<\/p>

One of the most innovative features is the inclusion of a wizard conversational based on artificial intelligence that answers questions about works by using information that is validated by the curators of the exhibition.<\/p>

The app is currently available in 25 languages and was designed to accommodate both families and children as well as to visitors specializing in contemporary art.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

BMW reaffirms the link between innovation, culture and design<\/strong><\/h5>

During a half-century, the collection BMW Art Cars has transcended the field of automotive, to consolidate itself as an international reference in contemporary art.<\/p>

Each vehicle represents a conversation different between creativity, technology and industrial design, demonstrating that the innovation also can be expressed from the artistic sensitivity.<\/p>

The meeting of the twenty cars in the BMW Welt is not only celebrates the anniversary of a historic collection, but that sums up the evolution of BMW as a brand that has been able to connect the performance automotive, culture, and creative experimentation.<\/p>

With this exhibition, BMW puts the finishing touches on a tour of fifty years that began with an idea seemingly impossible, and today it continues to inspire both artists as engineers around the world.<\/p>
