BMW Group Plant Landshut develops software to integrate humanoid robots into production

BMW Group is expanding its physical artificial intelligence capabilities through the development of specialized software for humanoid robots at its Plant Landshut in Germany. The project aims to combine data, robotics and artificial intelligence to identify future applications in component production.

The initiative focuses on developing open software platforms, generating and processing training data, simulating production processes, planning movements and training robotic systems. This work complements the humanoid robotics pilot projects already under way at BMW Group plants in Leipzig, Germany, and Spartanburg, United States.

The wide variety of components and manufacturing processes at Landshut provides ideal conditions for testing these technologies in real production environments. The objective is to determine which tasks humanoid robots could perform in the future, particularly those requiring flexibility, precision, fine motor skills and an understanding of the surrounding workplace.

BMW Group is developing systems that combine traditional programming with modern Vision-Language-Action artificial intelligence models. These models enable robots to recognize objects, understand instructions, assess situations and autonomously determine the appropriate actions.

The learning process is supported by demonstrations performed by specialists. Cameras, motion-capture suits and data gloves are used to record movements and work sequences. This information is subsequently converted into general behavior models that can be applied to different tasks and industrial use cases.

Before being introduced into active production, the solutions are tested in virtual environments and experimental installations. This allows BMW Group to simulate trajectories, evaluate processes in advance, reduce risks and accelerate the development of new robotic capabilities.

Plant Landshut is working closely with Landshut University of Applied Sciences and Athenyx Robotics, a technology startup originating from the academic environment of RWTH Aachen University. Together with BMW Group specialists, the company is developing an intelligence platform that integrates perception, learning, simulation and decision-making.

Through this project, BMW Group is advancing toward a modular and flexible robotics ecosystem in which learned skills can eventually be transferred between different robotic systems and industrial applications. The strategy will enable the company to progressively determine where humanoid robotics can deliver tangible improvements in efficiency, precision and flexibility within component production.
