BMW World (Show Room)

BMW Welt 02
BMW Welt

BMW Welt is the Show Room of the BMW Group and the place where you can make reservations for test drives of vehicles or motorcycles.

CONCEPT

BMW Welt is one of the first buildings to represent a new generation of communication buildings for the 21st century. This is where the corporation enters into dialogue with its clients, friends and visitors from all over the world, a place of meeting and exchange.

The open style of architecture and the glass façade allow plenty of light to enter the rooms and open up the building to its surroundings. Simultaneously, BMW Welt blends harmoniously into the context of the Olympiapark architecture and existing BMW buildings.

The interior of BMW Welt is as remarkable as its architecture. Even the smallest detail conveys the notion of uniqueness to visitors. The different perspectives of the room, easy orientation and maximum comfort create the right atmosphere to present the BMW Group brands (BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars) as an impressive experience. This means seeing, feeling, hearing, smelling and tasting the brands - in short, experiencing the world of BMW Group brands with all your senses.

In December 2001, after in-depth discussions, the BMW Group Board voted in favor of the architectural concept by Coop Himmelb (l) au. The outstanding BMW Welt concept is largely characterized by the unique roof structure and the so-called Double Cone.

ARCHITECTURE

The futuristic architecture of BMW Welt is unique. An extension of the underlying double-cone geometry, the roof takes the form of a 16,000 m2 cloud that appears to float on its supporting structure of only twelve interlocking columns. Its base consists of an upper and lower grid layer with cells measuring five by five meters. Between these layers are diagonal struts that interlock the gratings in a spatial support structure.

This powerful and dynamic eye catcher is perfected by the Double Cone in a prominent position at the head of the frame. Caught in a whirlwind of glass and steel, the tornado spins upward and ends on a roof that takes the form of a floating, flying cloud. Generated by the dynamic turns of the two supporting layers, this tornado functions as the main bearing of the roof.

The construction of BMW Welt required 4,000 tons of steel. About a quarter of this was built in the Double Cone alone. At a height of 28 meters and 48 meters in circumference, it has a 14-meter wasp waist at its center. Each of the steel sections was manufactured with its own special template, and each had to be within two millimeters of design specifications. These sections also function as conduits for key data cables.

The Double Cone concludes in the so-called Ring Bean, which evenly distributes the load from the roof and transfers it to the ground through the exterior facade. Although the roof and the Double Cone form a single piece in terms of statics, the Double Cone also functions as a key support for the 16,000 m2 roof structure.

To make the roof look like a floating cloud, a small number of visible supports were given great importance. Only eleven columns support the ceiling, which could arch over Piazza San Marco in Venice.

BMW WELFARE POLICY ON QUALITY, ENVIRONMENT AND OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY

With its corporate strategy "Number ONE next", the BMW Group pursues the goal of being the world's leading provider of premium products and premium services for individual mobility. Exceptional quality, process orientation and sustainable management throughout the value creation chain are evident in this context, as is the creation and maintenance of safe and performance enhancing working conditions for all employees and partners.

Quality, environmental protection and occupational safety are considered an integral responsibility of all managers and employees of the BMW Group. Its quality and environmental awareness is promoted through the twelve core convictions of the BMW Group and the principle of continuous improvement. The high aspirations of the BMW Group naturally also apply to BMW Welt.

As the company's showcase and its largest collection and expertise center, BMW Welt is the most important permanent, international and public platform of the BMW Group. Here, visitors and customers have the unique opportunity to experience all of the company's brands, themes and future perspectives in a unique and innovative way.

To ensure this experience is of the highest quality, some 600 employees work to optimize all processes on an ongoing basis. Quality across the entire range of processes is the prerequisite for excellence. For this reason, it is essential to focus on the interests of the clients and the professional orientation of the processes. In doing so, we select the processes that are most effective, efficient and sustainable for BMW Welt.

According to the BMW Group environmental guidelines, environmental targets are set according to the principle of continuous improvement as part of target management. Here the legal context and other requirements are taken into account, as well as key environmental aspects, technology options, general financial, operational and business conditions, and the views of stakeholders (customers, society, politics, investors, etc. .). It goes without saying that observing all legal obligations and legal requirements is essential.

At BMW Welt, a safe working environment is provided for employees and partners that promotes health and excellence. Additionally, since we are a public place, we also take our responsibility to visitors very seriously and strive to provide a safe and eco-friendly visitor experience down to the last detail.

Key performance key figures are regularly compiled and evaluated. Communication with interested external groups and authorities is always carried out through or by agreement with the responsible press offices of the BMW Group.

Our stated goal is to deliver on these promises and to continually develop and improve to continually raise the standards we have set for ourselves.

SUSTAINABILITY AT BMW WELT

Solar energy passing through the roof and facades increases heating in the building, and its large walled areas contribute to ventilation. Meanwhile, the glass envelopes help keep the surface temperature at a comfortable level.

HISTORY

BMW Welt opened its doors on October 20, 2007, the culmination of years of planning. After the decision to build BMW Welt was approved in the late 1990s, the next burning question was choosing a suitable site. It was clear that the new event and delivery center had to be built in a place steeped in history, close to the current BMW buildings.

The best idea was provided by a competition open to all architects.

This competition attracted 275 of the best architectural offices in the world.

The jury's verdict was unanimous: the winner was the fascinating design presented by Professor Wolf D Prix and his Viennese office Coop Himmelb (l) au. In his student days, Professor Prix had attended lectures by Professor Karl Schwanzer, the architect of the BMW Tower (the so-called "Four-Cylinder Building") and the BMW Museum.

During one of his presentations, Professor Schwanzer was suddenly called. When he returned, he told his students: "I am celebrating Christmas at the beginning of this year: I just won the BMW Tower!" Exactly thirty years later, Professor Prix himself was giving a presentation in Vienna. He was also called: "You have won the BMW Welt Competition!"

From planning and preparation in 2003 to the grand opening in 2007, you can explore the highlights of BMW Welt history by clicking on our milestones. Have fun!
